The Spotlight Effect and Other Updates

Hey to all 65 of you!

If you’re new here, it might be beneficial to read some of the previous posts.

This week we’re talking about the Spotlight Effect and recent updates for Equal Opportunity.

The Spotlight Effect.

This is an egocentric bias in which we overestimate the extent to which others notice or observe us and our actions. Essentially you feel as there's a spotlight shining on you.

Is that a good or a bad thing?

Well…

You might tend to:

  • get anxious

  • avoid social situations

  • fear trying new things to avoid judgement

And all of this is unnecessary.

We suffer more in imagination than in reality.

So how can we get rid of this?

  1. Realise people don’t care as much as you think. They have their own spotlight shining on them.

  2. Shift your focus outwards. Everyone is just as interesting as yourself. Take the time to see that.

These two points can lead to a feeling of sonder.

sonder
n. the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own, populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness.

Religion aside, it is important to realise that you only live once. This is true for everyone else.

Equal Opportunity Updates

Since last week:

→ reached out to 28 potential sponsors; so far got 4 NO’s and 1 Maybe. They can’t hide forever. 😅

→ compiled and opened the brand ambassador programme; 125 applications so far.

→ generated 164,409 impressions on LinkedIn; this means more chances for EO to reach the people that need it most.

→ 350 new people joined EO.

→ currently in talks for a potential partnership regarding the ‘interactive’ part of the proposed website.

As always, I’m open to suggestions.

Talk Friday,

George
